06 Jun Biophilia: Everglades 10,000 Islands
PHOTOGRAPHED & WRITTEN BY MIKEAL BELAND
Everglades National Park’s west coast contains thousands of islands covered in mangrove ecosystems, trees that filter salt out of the brackish water. Home to hundreds of species, many birds and manatees seek refuge here from open water.
A pod of dolphins took a break from feeding to follow our boat’s wake across the islands at sunset. Of all the wildlife encounters you can find in a National Park, this has got to be one of my favorites.
